2019 Annual FLCOC

The Tampa Chapter MOAA has been designated to be the host chapter for the 2019 Florida Council of Chapters annual convention.
On August 3rd, the Tampa chapter had a very productive board meeting at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa (SHRS). The purpose of this special meeting was to tour the hotel and resort and have the board members vote on the SHRS as the proposed venue for the June 2019 MOAA Council of Chapters annual convention.

The historic SHRS is a full-service Spa situated on the west shore of Tampa Bay in Pinellas County in the quaint city of Safety Harbor, Florida. Florida’s only Natural Mineral Springs Spa was established in 1926, utilizing the waters from the Espiritu Santo Springs, discovered by the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto in 1539.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Safety Harbor, the city is the home of the natural mineral springs with about 17,000 residents boasting a “small town feel” with tree-lined streets offering several novelty/antique shops and a number of restaurants along its Main Street that are within walking distance of the SHRS.

Chapter President, COL Carol Zieres, opened the board meeting introducing three guests from the Florida Council of Chapters (FLCOC): Council Convention Coordinator, COL (Ret) Troy Scott, from the Sarasota Chapter, and his replacement, MAJ (Ret) Kirk Faryniasz; and COL (Ret) Len Friedlander, Vice President of the FLCOC. MAJ (Ret) Carol Burgess, Area Vice President, West Central District, from the Spring Hill Chapter also attended the meeting. The Tampa chapter board members had a good opportunity to ask questions of the Council Officers and share ideas for the 2019 convention. After touring the resort facility, we were served a delicious plated lunch and discussed the convention itinerary and the meeting room assignments at this locale. The board meeting concluded with a motion that passed unanimously by the Tampa chapter board of directors to hold the June 20-23 (2019) FLCOC annual convention at the SHRS!

We are going to need a lot of volunteers to serve on various committees before and during this convention to make it a successful and memorable experience for MOAA. This is why I’m putting my “plea” out to the members at large early on to put a team together! If anyone is interested in helping by serving as a committee chairperson or serving on one of the committees listed below, please contact COL Zieres as soon as possible.
